No Changes in Railway Travel Rules from March 2025: Officials Clarify

Existing Rules to Remain Unchanged

Senior officials of the Railway Ministry have confirmed that there will be no modifications to rail travel rules from March 2025. The current regulations will continue to be in effect, and for the convenience of passengers, the Railways has reiterated these guidelines.

In an exclusive conversation with ABP News, railway officials dismissed rumors about changes in travel rules, stating that all existing policies will remain intact. They clarified that only passengers holding counter tickets will be permitted to travel in general coaches. Additionally, travelers with online waiting list tickets will not be allowed in general compartments. Those with counter waiting tickets can avail of a refund up to 30 minutes before the train’s departure.

Reservation Rules

Passengers can book railway tickets up to 60 days in advance. This rule, implemented last year, has made securing confirmed tickets easier. Previously, reservations were allowed 120 days in advance, but nearly 25% of passengers would later cancel their bookings.

Special Circumstances and Flexibility

While railway rules remain firm, flexibility is sometimes exercised for passenger convenience. Although travelers with waiting tickets are not allowed in sleeper or AC coaches, in exceptional cases, the Train Ticket Examiner (TT) may grant permission. If multiple tickets exist under the same PNR and at least one ticket is confirmed, passengers with waiting tickets are generally not permitted to travel. However, TTs often allow a maximum of two waiting passengers to share a single confirmed seat. In such cases, the Railways is notified to ensure that waiting ticket holders do not receive refunds.

Railways’ Commitment to Passenger Convenience

The Railway Ministry has reiterated that no changes are being made to the existing travel rules. However, the department remains committed to ensuring passenger comfort by implementing necessary flexibility when required. If travelers encounter any issues during their journey, they are encouraged to contact railway authorities for assistance.
